Everything a tango dancer may wish for, Carlos Copello
accomplished it. He toured the world alongside the companies Tango Argentino, Esquina Carlos Gardel, Tango Pasión and Forever Tango; performed with Mariano Mores’s orchestra, the Sexteto Mayor and the Sexteto Tango; shot films under the direction of Robert Duvall, Wong Kar-Wai and Sally Potter; and shared the dance floor with Carmencita Calderón and Valeria Mazza. A disciple of Todaro, today Carlos Copello passes on his instructor’s
dance secrets. Todaro was a model of tango dance classicism, taking traditional tango to the limit of its technical possibilities without losing its very essence. He trained almost all currently established dancers.

Miguel Zotto is one of the most important dancers of his generation. He took part in Tango Argentino and later founded, alongside Milena Plebs, the company Tango x 2, a landmark of the 1990s that gave rise to a cliché-free style that was exported to the whole world: a “for export” style of which the full-blooded Porteños approve. With an over twenty-year career, the company keeps growing and captivating audiences worldwide. Zotto’s dancing is elegant and playful, two features of Buenos Aires men which, when delivered moderately, characterise the good tango. This is an ideal opportunity to learn from a great artist who rarely gives lessons.

Clase Magistral por Juan Carlos Copes
Dance Lessons and Seminars / AdvancedTienda HarrodsTango lesson
An illustrious milonguero and acclaimed figure of the stage tango, Juan Carlos Copes is not only a dancer and choreographer but also an established teacher. The secrets of his style, his characteristic figures and his unique choreographic language have drawn the attention of the followers of the genre for decades. In his own words: “There is no person in the world, and there will never be, who holds the truth about tango-dance, for, as it is a means of expressing feelings, it cannot take a specific shape. For that reason I do not like being called a teacher. One can get to be a guide for those who feel tango and wish to dance it, regardless of their age. In that case then, one can help, lead and support that passion for something so noble, so pure, so Argentine.” Among his innumerable students are Robert Duvall, Liza Minelli, Julio Bocca and Eleonora Cassano.

Clase Magistral por María Nieves y Juan Manuel Fernández
Dance Lessons and Seminars / AdvancedTienda HarrodsTango lesson
Rather than a conventional lesson on dance techniques, this will be the occasion for everyone to meet María. A unique opportunity to get to know the most improtant dancer nowadays. From the milongas and the slums all the way up to the most prestigious theatres worldwide, María Nieves, together with Juan Carlos Copes, laid the foundations of contemporary tango as art and entertainment… and they managed to do so without role models and without ever leaving the neighbourhood. In 1983, they put tango in the world’s spotlight as the leading couple of the show Tango Argentino. This did not happen by chance, but as a well-deserved recognition for an over 30 year career in Argentina, from their first, successful steps which in 1951 lead them to win a dance contest after being acclaimed by an audience of ten thousand and later on, in 1952, to the creation of the Conjunto Juvenil de Tango Moderno (Modern Tango Youth Ensemble), from which stemmed every tango company touring the world today.

Tango Salón
FilmsTienda HarrodsBokova celebrates the lives of the tangueros and tangueras, old milongueros, local and foreign dancers of all ages, all of whom share stories of tango and love.
At the Confitería Ideal, there is an atmosphere of eternal romance, haunted by the old 20s orchestras and the melodies of the tango ensembles that echoed between its columns in the 40s and 50s, and the dreams of poets who were reinventing the world at their tables.

El Torcán

After thirty years of singing tango in bars and nightclubs, he finally fulfils his lifelong dream: to become a renowned Buenos Aires singer.

During the unfolding of their day they confront problems and disappointments of a very personal nature. But for each one the moment arrives when they must put the day aside and escape into another world, to put on their tango shoes and go to the milonga to dance, to fulfil a desire, a need, even if it’s only for the few minutes that a tango lasts.

Tango Deseo
FilmsTienda Harrods“Cozarinsky goes back to his distant origins, the Porteño popular culture. But there is a present, that of the company Tangokinesis and choreographer Ana María Stekelman. The bodies of dancers move about a mysterious space, dancing to the rhythm of the orchestras of the city. The film opens with a dance lesson on classic techniques, but the warmth of tango and the sensuality of the dancers go some steps further. New horizons unfold in the enclosed world of this dance of obscure rituals. There are no words or reflections; only bodies, dancing, a camera and the fervour of the two dancers” (Néstor Tirri).

The collectors will be talking about their extensive experience in treasuring albums, and the audience will delight in the sound of historic pieces in their original formats. The first meeting will deal with the art of recording, with the guest presence of José Soler, a musician, violinist and recording engineer of the Odeón studio since the fifties. He was the technical engineer of the orchestras of Osvaldo Pugliese, Alfredo De Angelis, Aníbal Troilo, Roberto Firpo and Francisco Canaro. He will be recounting anecdotes about those years when the great classics were being recorded. The second session will feature the participation of Héctor Lucci, a collector of phonographic devices and cylinders, and Bruno Cespi, who boasts a massive collection of photographs and scores. Lost recordings on different formats will be played and discussed by them and a group of fellow collectors.

Specialised journalists offer a historical perspective on two fertile universes associated with tango: those of the cabaret and boxing. There will be plenty of anecdotes, enlightenment and sensitive analysis.
Tango y Cabaret - Casak - Del Mazo
LecturesTienda HarrodsA good deal of the heyday of the typical orchestras in the 1940s and 1950s went by in the semidarkness of cabarets, heering up those nights of tango and dance. From Chantecler to Tibidabo, a whole mythology was born, which later extended to the lyrics, the cinema, the low life of “Milonguita” and the memories of those who witnessed the activity of the two nightclubs. However, his legend still mystifies us. How was the everyday life of the tango musicians in the cabaret? Were families allowed? Which were the emblematic orchestras in each venue? Was the admission unaffordable? Focusing on the indissoluble relationship between tango and cabaret in the forties and fifties, this lecture coordinated by journalists Mariano del Mazo and Andrés Casak gathered the musicians and researchers who can shed light on a topic that is as fascinating as it is hazy. Juan Carlos Godoy will be livening up the occasion with his songs.

Tango y Box - Osvaldo Príncipi
LecturesTienda HarrodsBoxing is the sport that has been most related to tango throughout the history of the city of Buenos Aires. It is nearly a century-long relationship that has placed the stars of the ring in the annals of tango history. Moreover, many tango aces hit the ring: among them are Celedonio Flores and Cátulo Castillo, whose skills were registered in many a chronicle. These tangos, made into “video clips,” will be watched and discussed in the 90-minute lecture given by specialised journalist Osvaldo Príncipi. The lecture will provide the opportunity to recall –with official bibliography–
different anecdotes of outstanding tango figures and to evoke, by means of archive material, the close bond between tango and boxing. How did boxing found a place in tango lyrics? Are people aware of the fact that the two disciplines have a shared vocabulary? What is the ranking of favourite tangos with boxingrelated lyrics and how where their authors’ inspired to write them? These are some of the topics to be discussed.
